Apple said Friday that its Ping network for music has reached more than 1 million users in its first 48 hours after launch.
One-third of the people who have downloaded iTunes 10 have joined Ping, said Eddy Cue who is Apple's vice president of Internet Services. He expects the network continue growing in coming weeks as more people download iTunes 10. Apple's CEO Steve Jobs had said Ping is similar to Facebook and Twitter and its users can follow artists and friends, and know what others are listening and purchasing.
Now with 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries, Ping has a ready traffic, even though users will have to opt-in to the service after downloading the latest version of iTunes. Initially people could connect to Facebook users but that feature is disabled. However Hours after launch, spammers had already started posting links related to scams.Fake celebrity accounts have been created as well.
